I'm just playing Deus ex and as before in other games I was thinking about who reads all the boring stuff you find in journals, books, pcs ?

So let's find out :)

How much do you read of the various stuff you find around in games ?

I do read stuff, and sometimes I think it's a good way to convey a story and/or story elements.
It's not that having everything to read is nice, but it in a way it makes more sense than people just leaving audio logs or videos of everything they do.
Also when I don't read everything in the first run I do that in the other ones.

An other game with a lot of stuff to read was Unreal, and while people thinks it's a pretty basic shooter, lots of its lore and story elements lies on the text written by various living or non living creatures in the planet you landed on. Sure it's not useful to read everything, but at the time very little FPS did that.
The fact I mention it it's because it's not an RPG but a shooter.

Deus Ex even if it's an FPS/RPG hybrid, it shares a lot from both sides and lots of RPGs are games who contains a lot of reading or in certain cases only audio / video logs, but that's the thing.
Games like system shock and bioshock do share similarities.

Though for me they should keep the story even if it's an important aspect of RPGs less relevant than the gameplay as for me the gameplay is what matters in games, even if I should say that gameplay and atmosphere, because it's not agreeable when the art of the game looks too bad. I don't talk about HD graphics here, just about general design.
